Nicholas Taylor McDowell

I provided technical support and inspiration for Hotwired’s web designers for emerging technologies. I prototyped and produced interface elements, splashy front door animations, DHTML and CSS presentations. I also rotated the ads for a while; let us not speak of that.

Livewired
Hotwired’s experiment into “push” media, DHTML, and semiotic screensavers. Architected the DHMTL channel and developed techniques for the graphic designers to create stunning visual designs using (at the time) emerging technologies of XML and CSS. While the project wasn’t a commercial success it can be found for all time on the Windows 98 install disk.
RGB Gallery - 49,682,923 stories about
Created generative art project with graphic designer Anna McMillan for Hotwired’s RGB gallery.

Webmonkey
Wrote a number of columns for and became a staff member of Webmonkey, Hotwired’s publication about web production and web technologies. Created javascript library, Apache XSSI parsing extension for Dreamweaver, and other tools and techniques for the site.

Animation Express
Was the launch production manager for Hotwired’s online showcase of animation.
Page of the Future
Hotwired’s internal newsletter/zeitgeist of the web. Produced a weekly spoof of the web for employees. The featured movie was created to highlight the accomplishments of the user testing group.
Star Wars Episode I Animated Comic
Adapted Dark Horse’s Phantom Menace comic for StarWars.com. Integrated comic with audio for blockbuster movie, animated frames and mitigated delivery over variable bandwidth. The comic got a mention in Scott McCloud’s second treatise on comics.
Robota
Web presentation for Doug Chiang’s project of robots, aliens, and humanity’s future. Created the sound design, and flash programming.

[*] Red Industries
Information architecture, animation, prototyping, and web design for a number of pre-bubble companies. Some exist now only as long forgotten billboards that no one wants to take down.

Star Wars: Starfighter, Jedi Starfighter (Xbox)
Flash programming and interface design for Xbox ports of LucasArts starship combat games.

Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds
Interface design and programming for innovative Xbox adaptation of pioneering collectible trading card game.

Tales of Taliesin
Personal five year mod project with Bioware’s Neverwinter Nights Aurora engine. Created an online persistent world RPG and gaming community around original fantasy sword and sorcery fiction. This was an intense four year project to teach myself the ins and outs of game design.
If you would like to see a sample you can play through one of the more
popular dungeons from Taliesin;

Adventures Through the Hedge Maze

America’s Army: Rise of a Soldier
Designed systems for storytelling, dialog, and to represent non-combat actions and results within the game such as communication with indigs, wounded or killed teammates, and personalization. Designed the RPG progression system for single player and online multiplayer progression. Combined core army values, simple RPG like skill system and expressed through the limited interactions of the realistic First person shooter. Wrote story and dialog for missions and interface.

Golden Axe
Set narrative direction for preproduction of barbaric sword and sorcery game for next gen game systems. Designed levels and boss battles.

Ironman
Making giant impregnable space tether fortress filled with evil A.I.M. mercenaries for everyone’s favorite drunken superhero to fight.
